Australia is the third most popular study abroad destination for international students after the UK and USA. With growing number of international students every year, Australia is an increasingly popular destination for international studies.
Australia’s international student enrolment hit a new high in October 2017. The latest data from Department of Education and Training (DET) reports total foreign enrolment of 766,483 students by October 2017, which was 680,000 in October 2016. This data shows overall 13% of enrolment growth in 2017. The total commencements also show 11% growth, from 380,000 in October 2016 to 423,000 in October 2017.
The next-largest sectors were the higher education and vocational education and training (VET) which accounts for 15% growth of both enrolment and commencements for the year. English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) continue to account for 4% growth for both overall foreign enrolment and commencements. However, China remains the leading source country for ELICOS providers and is driving the most of the growth in ELICOS numbers through October 2017 along with Brazil and Colombia.
