Dalhousie University, commonly known as Dal, is a prominent public research university in Nova Scotia, Canada. It boasts three campuses in Halifax, a fourth in Bible Hill, and an additional medical school campus in Saint John, New Brunswick. Dalhousie offers a wide array of educational opportunities, with over 4,000 courses and more than 200 degree programs available across 13 undergraduate, graduate, and professional faculties. The university is a member of the U15, a group of research-intensive universities in Canada.

Dalhousie University has a rich history dating back to its establishment as Dalhousie College in 1818. It was founded by Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie, along with the first principal, education reformer Thomas McCulloch. However, the college faced financial difficulties and didn’t hold its first class until 1838. It underwent reorganization in 1863, becoming “The Governors of Dalhousie College and University.” In 1997, the institution formally adopted the name “Dalhousie University” through provincial legislation, which also facilitated its merger with the Technical University of Nova Scotia.

The university is home to two student unions: the Dalhousie Student Union and the Dalhousie Association for Graduate Students. Its varsity sports teams, known as the Tigers, participate in the Atlantic University Sport conference of Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Additionally, the Faculty of Agriculture has its own varsity teams called the Dalhousie Rams, which compete in the ACAA and CCAA.

Dalhousie University is a coeducational institution with a diverse student body of over 20,000 students and a substantial alumni network of 150,000 graduates worldwide. The university boasts an impressive list of notable alumni, including a Nobel Prize winner, 93 Rhodes Scholars, as well as numerous senior government officials, academics, and business leaders.
