Université Laval, also known as Laval University in English, is a public research university located in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The university was established by François de Montmorency-Laval as Séminaire de Québec in 1663, making it the oldest institution of higher education in Canada and the first in North America to offer higher education in the French language. Initially founded in Old Québec, the university relocated to a new campus in the suburban borough of Sainte-Foy–Sillery–Cap-Rouge in the 1950s.
Université Laval is highly regarded and is ranked among the top 10 Canadian universities in terms of research funding. It is known for its excellence in research and is home to four Canada Excellence Research Chairs. Similar to most institutions in Quebec, the university’s name, “Université Laval,” remains untranslated into English, and its courses are primarily offered in the French language.
